The Styles

Hearing Aid Styles From Largest to Smallest

Behind-the-ear (BTE): the most established and widely used style, worn behind the ear and connected to the ear by a thin tube or wire. BTE devices suit almost any level of hearing loss, are relatively easy to handle, and are the style most commonly provided on the NHS.Receiver-in-canal (RIC): a smaller, more discreet variant of BTE, where the speaker sits in the ear canal rather than behind the ear. Popular in the private market for a good balance of discretion, power and ease of handling.In-the-ear (ITE): custom-moulded to fill the bowl of the outer ear. Larger controls and battery than smaller styles make it easier to handle, while remaining less visible than a BTE.In-the-canal (ITC): smaller again, sitting partly within the ear canal. A middle ground between visibility and ease of handling.Completely-in-canal / invisible-in-canal (IIC): the smallest and most discreet styles, sitting deep in the ear canal. See our dedicated invisible hearing aids page for more detail.

Choosing a Style

What Actually Decides Which Style Suits You

The right style depends on your level of hearing loss, the shape and size of your ear canal, your manual dexterity and eyesight, and how much discretion matters to you. It is also worth considering whether you want rechargeable power, since this is now available across most styles.

A qualified audiologist will talk through the realistic options for your ears during your assessment, rather than you having to guess from a list.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Which hearing aid style is best for severe hearing loss?

Generally BTE and RIC styles offer the most power and are most often recommended for greater levels of hearing loss, though this depends on your individual assessment.

Which style is easiest to handle?

Larger styles such as BTE and ITE tend to have bigger batteries and controls, which many people find easier to manage than the smallest in-canal styles.

Can I choose any style I want?

Not always — your level of hearing loss and the shape of your ear canal will rule some styles in or out. Your audiologist will explain what is realistic for you.

Do all styles come in rechargeable versions?

Most do now, though availability varies by brand and model. Ask your audiologist which rechargeable options exist within the style that suits you.
